CoolSculpting/Zeltiq FAQs

CoolSculpting is a relatively new fat reduction technology that was developed by Zeltiq, Inc. It targets the fat cells’ greater susceptibility to lower temperatures and uses a sophisticated cooling device to remove unwanted fat cells. The following frequently asked questions and answers can explain many of the issues patients are interested in understanding before they decide to do the procedure with our LA Dermatologist, our doctor.

1. How does Coolsculpting work?

CoolSculpting cools the target area to a very low temperature. At that point, the targeted fat cells, which are unable to handle the cold, begin to crystallize and shrink. Once they have crystallized, they are no longer useful to the body and will be flushed out naturally along with other dead cells. As a result, the layer of fat thins, leaving you with a more toned appearance.

2. How is it different from liposuction?

Liposuction and CoolSculpting are two procedures that are offered at our location near Santa Monica & Beverly Hills geared towards removing fat in stubborn areas. However, liposuction is a surgical method that requires small incisions to be made and fat then gets suctioned out from a small tube, creating a slimmer physique. CoolSculpting, on the other hand, is a non-surgical liposuction treatment - although fat will still be removed, it will be done without any anesthesia, downtime, or incisions. Zeltiq’s innovative technology allows for the body to rid itself of the dead fat cell layers without feeling pain. Coolsculpting may not have as immediate or dramatic results as liposuction, but it also provides permanent fat reduction as long as it is maintained with a good diet and exercise.

3. How long will it take me to see the results?

The body will remove the fat cells that died naturally. The removal process will be gradual; the body cannot remove all of those cells at once. Therefore, the results will not be visible until after about a month. The changes will be most evident after two months and the body will continue to rid itself of the remaining dead fat cells for up to half a year. While the improvement may not be immediate, it will be consistent.

4. Are there any side effects?

The FDA cleared CoolSculpting in 2010 for use on the flanks (also known as “love handles”) and the abdomen. Based on the experience with the procedure in tens of thousands of cases in the U.S., it is a safe treatment with virtually no downtime and normal activities can resume right after the treatment.

5. Is CoolSculpting painful?

At first during the treatment, there may be discomfort such as pressure and the feeling of extreme coldness at the site. Once the procedure is completed, there may be redness, swelling, and numbness in the targeted areas. The redness and swelling will subside, but the numbness can last up to a few weeks.

6. Is CoolSculpting right for me?

CoolSculpting is geared toward men and women are not obese and want to reduce the fat in areas that they cannot get rid of through either diet or exercise. It is a not a weight loss tool, but rather a targeted fat reduction technology. Please consult with our Los Angeles Dermatologist, our doctor to determine if you are a good candidate for Coolsculpting.

7. How long will the results last?

The results are permanent because this procedure removes the fat cells. As long as you maintain your current weight and continue to have a good diet and adequate amount of the exercise after the procedure, the changes will remain.
